The following list focuses mainly on the designators you can receive coming out of The Basic School. In some cases, your designator may be slightly different until you finish your MOS school. For example, as a Communications Officer you will be an 0601 (Basic Communications Officer) until you finish the course at which point you will be an 0602.
This page is currently being updated to align with the “Marine Officer MOS Assignment Handbook”. The Basic School. Camp Barrett. March 3, 2019. Those MOS’s with links to more information have been updated. Last update 10 February 2021.

The specialties within the Intelligence 02 community are analysis, counterintelligence, imagery interpretation, geographic intelligence and human intelligence. Duty assignments vary widely from all levels of the Operating Forces, Supporting Establishment, and Joint Commands.
Entry-level Marine Intelligence Officers will be given specific training within one of the following disciplines: Ground, Human Source, Signals or Air Intelligence. These officers will gain unique opportunities for leadership, deployment and training. Once the rank of Major is attained, all of the disciplines merge together as the officer becomes a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Intelligence Officer. After three years of experience and completion of MIOC (MAGTF Intelligence Officer Course), you will be designated as a MAGTF Intelligence Officer, with leadership opportunities in both joint and Marine Corps billets.
Following career designation and four or more years of intelligence experience (usually around rank of Captain), all Marine Corps intelligence officers from the four specialty intelligence MOSs (0203, 0204, 0206, and 0207) merge into the 0202 MAGTF Intelligence Officer PMOS.

What about Tactical radio operator?
0621 – Tactical Radio Operator is an enlisted billet. On the officer side, you could be an 0602 Communications Officers and be in charge of a platoon of 0621’s.
How long is MOS School for Tactical radio operator? My fiancé is going to do that specialty.
I believe it’s around 4-6 weeks, but it’s also common to wait a month or two before being able to get into the course. Overall, expect him to be in 29 Palms for 2-3 months before getting his first duty station.
The Communications Officer Course is 19 weeks.
Can you be a officer and a sniper
No, but you could be a Scout Sniper Platoon Commander if you go the Ground Intelligence path.
How much do Air Logistics Officers deploy
In today’s operational tempo, they deploy just as much as every other supporting MOS. Particularly, the Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments always have an Aviation Maintenance Officer and an Aviation Supply Officer.
What is the MOS for a Marine Officer’s flying FA18 D?
All aviators start out as student and will compete for their T/M/S (type/model/series) while at flight school.
Do Marine Logistics Officers deploy?
Yes, Marine officers from every MOS deploy.
I know some of the ones I cannot do as a female but could you add which ones are restricted?
The MOSs that come to mind are: field artillery, tanks, AAVs, ground intel, and infantry. However, there is currently a studying being conducted that allows female Marines to go through the Infantry Officers Course (IOC). If you graduate, you will NOT become an infantry officer. It is only a study as of right now. Last I heard, they need about 100 female Marines to attempt the course in order to have a baseline of statistics suitable to present to congress.
Let me do more research before I mark the female restricted MOSs.
Any update on this question? I appreciate your taking the time to research this topic prior to answering.
At this moment studies are continually being conducted. A huge exercise was recently completed to determine whether females could perform to the same standard as males in various MOSs.
The last official update was MARADMINS Active Number: 589/14
FEMALE MARINES WITH THE MOS OF 13XX WILL NOT BE ASSIGNED TO COMBAT ASSAULT OR THE COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALIONS, PENDING THE RESULTS OF THE MARINE CORPS FORCE INTEGRATION PLAN (MCFIP) RESEARCH EFFORTS. ADDITIONALLY, FEMALE MARINES OF ANY MOS WILL NOT BE PERMANENTLY ASSIGNED TO INFANTRY REGIMENTS, INFANTRY BATTALIONS, RECONNAISSANCE BATTALIONS, FORCE RECONNAISSANCE COMPANIES, LIGHT ARMORED RECONNAISSANCE (LAR) BATTALIONS NOR MARINE SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMPANIES. HOWEVER, THEY MAY BE ATTACHED TO SUCH UNITS ON A TEMPORARY BASIS AS PART OF PARENT UNIT DETACHMENTS FOR SPECIFIC MISSIONS. THEY MAY BE DEPLOYED WITH THEIR PERMANENTLY ASSIGNED UNITS AND MAY BE ASSIGNED TO INDIVIDUAL AUGMENT BILLETS.
Sir,
In your opinion, what gives you an overall better chance of becoming an officer seeking to fly rotory-wing aircraft:
1. Naval Academy Marine Option
2. NROTC Marine Option
3. College OCS
If you go Naval Academy you will have two hurdle to cross: getting selected to be a Marine and then getting a flight contact. NROTC flight contacts can be competitive since there are only a limited number and you are competing against other NROTC midshipman around the country. The most significant benefit to PLC/OCC is you can get a flight contract going into the Marine Corp. However, I’ve seen Marines at TBS lose their flight contracts due to medical issues, or even just issues with paperwork. Some Marines also opt to give up their contract and go ground officer instead.
What is a Marines Officer job, that is closely related to computre science?
Communications and Signals Intelligence are the closest you will get. However, remember that an officers job is to lead, mentor, and inspire. Don’t expect to be the Marine establishing the data network in the middle of nowhere. Your Marines do that and you lead.
So as an Officer are we taught any skills in that field that we chose to go in. Or do we just lead marines and and make decision for as leader for marines. Thank you for you replies.
Officers are expected to be proficient in all areas related to their MOS. Yes, you will learn a lot of skills. For instance, the Communications and Signals Intelligence courses are 6 months long. If your Marines are physically setting up the communications infrastructure your the one planning and designing it.
Hello, my name is Dylan I have already enlisted into the corps I ship out June 4th and then I’ll be waiting to be selected to go to the Naval Academy. I was wondering if you could give me any pointers and additional information that my recruiter may not have told me yet.
Late response, I’m assuming you’re at the depot right about now. Sounds like you’ve done everything you can up until this point. Good luck.
Anthony, while the communications officer position is the closest entry level officer job, there is a family of occupation specialties that you may enter mid-career. These include Data Systems Specialist (8846), Data Systems Manager (8848), and Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (8858). All three require you to be selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA; this is a competitive process, so not all officers get this opportunity. Entry into all 3 depend more on your undergraduate academic performance in STEM more than your initial job in the Marines. 8846 and 8858 are heavy in technical CS and space systems classes while 8848 has several tracks that blend business management curriculum into the mix.
The other thing to be aware of is the growth of jobs in MARFOR Cyber Command. The USMC is developing, along with our sister services, cyber capabilities which include offensive and defensive network operations. Officers will have a place in these units. Bottom line – the Marines are looking for talent and if you are interested in CompSci as an academic field, there are viable paths if you have what it takes.
Jeremy, in response to jobs in MARFOR Cyber Command, do you know if the selection process is the same as for other Officer MOSs, meaning you list your top MOS preferences and receive one based on performance, or does it have a more direct selection process? I was not able to find out much information online regarding it.
No, the processes are nowhere near the same. Only about the best third of all officers are afforded a chance at NPS degrees after 3-6 years of service in the job you got out of The Basic School. Of that third, less than and eighth are selected for NPS. Those 3 respective degrees might not even be offered every year.
How long is logistics school for officers?
55 days
can females become a military police officer ?
and do they work with K-9 dogs ?
Yes, females can be Military Police Officers. Your unit may have dogs, but you would not be a handler. There are Marines specifically trained to handle dogs.
I don’t see any combat MOS besides infrantry, are officers not allowed to be special forces or do combat besides infantry?
Combat arms are generally considered to be infantry, artillery, tanks, AAVs, and combat engineering. Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is a separate entity that you can transition into from various MOSs.
I want to be stationed in the Pacific sector (Okinawa) is there a particular mos that can get me stationed there?
There is no guarantee; however, it’s more likely if you end up in a higher density MOS (e.g., communications, infantry, logistics.
Greg, if you want to go to Okinawa it shouldn’t be a problem. As long as you clear medical screening pretty much anyone who asks for Oki gets Oki.
Would a degree in Environmental Sciences be applicable to an Intelligence Officer?
The great thing about the Marine Corps is they teach you everything you need to know to be proficient in your MOS. If you want Intel, get a good standing at TBS and you will be successful.
I was told that my color vision deficiency would bar me from Infantry officer, and obviously aviation. Is there some sort of guide for what I can do with that? My first choices were Aviation and Infantry but I would still be interested in say, armored operations.
From what I know, all combat arms are restricted to color deficient individuals. Support MOSs such as supply, logistics, public affairs, adjutant, etc., should be open. You would have to confirm with a recruiter/OSO.
I am color blind, but still made it into communications.
Basic Communications Officer Course has moved to 29 Palms, CA
Question, what rank would a marine need to be to have the mos or assignment of Battery Training Office in the 12 Marines. Could you be a Sargent/ E-5 ?
Thank you
You could be a clerk in a training office right out of boot camp. It’s not a very restrictive office to get in. A sargeant would be likely though.
My top pick for my dream sheet would be communications. Based on your previous responses, you mentioned that the Marines would train me regardless of my undergraduate. However, are there things that I could do that would increase my chances of being selected for a comms slot? You mentioned doing well at TBS would increase one’s chances if getting their desired MOS. However, usually pilots that get slots are already getting their private pilot license (PPL) or doing extra curricular activities. Is there anything that is similar for the communications field?
Thanks for your time. Best!
There will be a lot of Comm slots, and not a lot of people who want it. Put it as #1, don’t suck too bad, and you will get Comms.
Hi I was wondering what the best officer MOS would be for me if I don’t want to have an office job or in other words be a “paper pusher”. I know there are limited options since I am a female. Thank you
Unfortunately, all officers are “paper pushers” to some degree. Be the officer that you want to be. There is nothing keeping you in the office except yourself. If you want to get out and do stuff with your Marines then PLAN FOR IT!
Is there any MOS’s that require officers to be on the ground fighting with fellow enlisted marines?
Infantry will put you closest to the fight, but you will never be the one kicking in doors.
Sir,
As a new LT that has not yet reported to TBS but is being required by MOL to give a primary MOS, what do I put? It specifies for recruits(8011), but not candidates.
8001 is the Ground Contract designator
Hello,
I’m about to start ROTC in about a week. Eventually I want to be a JAG officer. It’s my understanding that I can’t do JAG or go to law school until after I’ve served active duty for five years. Until I go to law school, in your opinion, what MOS would best aid a legal career?
In my opinion, there is no officer MOS that would aid you in becoming a JAG officer. However, all officers will likely act as investigators early on in their careers. It wouldn’t be unusual for a new officer to get to their first unit and be tasked with doing a Preliminary Inquiry (PI).
You don’t have to serve active duty for five years in order to qualify.
You could always drop from ROTC and sign a PLC law contract. You would have a narrow window to be able to do this, however, and would need to have a 150+ LSAT score, approved ROTC Drop letter, and an acceptance letter from a law school during your senior year prior to the April deadline for PLC applications. Contact your local OSO for more information.
DO combat engineer officers in a CEB see time in demolition and minefield clearing much? Also can you commission into a CEB from Marine NROTC?
To be more accurate, you could absolutely commission from NROTC, and then receive orders to a CEB out of TBS. However, to become a Combat Engineer you must be competitive at TBS, because it is a low quota MOS and 20-40 of your peers will likely have it as #1. My class had over 50 Marine officers put Combat Engineer in their top 5.
As an infantry officer, will you go into combat with your enlisted men?
-Life Goals: Graduate highschool this year, PLC program in college, graduate, become a US Marine-
Great officers and great enlisted men and women have died in combat. Exposure to danger and combat situations is an inherent part of being a Marine whether officer or enlisted and is not exclusive to a particular MOS. As an infantry officer, you will go where your Marines go. The same holds true for “most” MOSs.
How many mos’s can you pick? 3 choices?
You rank ALL of the MOSs in a list (excluding lawyers and pilots). It’s not uncommon to hear someone say they got their 10th, 15th, or 20th choice.
What would Amphious armed vechicles be under and where would that school be at?
It falls under tanks, but the course is in Camp Pendleton.
7210 Officers attend the Air Defense Control Officer Course, a 12 week course held at the Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, CA. Additionally, the 7204 Low Altitude Air Defense Officer MOS is missing from the list. Their school is also held at the Marine Corps Communication Electronics School in 29 Palms, CA.
Anyone know how long 7204 LAAD MOS school is supposed to be?
I want to become a MISO is there a way to do this right out of TBS or will I have to wait and apply?
No, MISO is not an assignment out of TBS.
Do adjutants 0180 and comptrollers 3404 deploy less? Do they also have a chance to work on ships? Thanks.
Yes, they can absolutely deploy on a MEU (i.e., work on a ship). They will usually deploy with their units, so it depends on where you end up. I met a comptroller who deployed with over a million in cash. His job was to patrol with infantry/reconnaissance units and use the money to gain information and help the populace.
Is there on and off base housing for families at infantry officer school at Quantico or are barracks mandatory?
For IOC/TBS, if your married, you will get BAH (~$1850 for a 2ndLt) to find a place out in town to live. You will also get a room in the barracks that you will be required to stay in some nights.
If you want to live on base you can apply for it. Although, you will forfeit the BAH. There’s a lot of places to live for significantly less than $1800 so I would suggest living out in town and pocketing the extra money.
Hello,
What happens if you are with the reserves? I read somewhere that you wouldn’t get any help.
That would be a big deal as I currently have two kids and a mortgage.
Thanks!
Are there any Officer options that allow me to work with chemicals and biologicals? I’m in an NROTC program and plan to commission that route.
The closest thing would probably be Combat Engineering since you deal with explosives. However, you won’t be dealing with chemicals directly.
I’m currently about to get out the army and thinking about joining the marines. My overall goal is to work for the secret service or DIA. Before making my final decision, would you recommend the enlisted route or officer route to gain better experience and skills.
Having no Secret Service/CIA/FBI experience. I don’t think I could offer a valuable opinion.
Is aviation ordinance officer a job you can get out of TBS
Aviation Maintenance only.
When did Communication Officer MOS change from 2502 to 0602 and why the change?
Comm Officers used to be known as “commodity” officers, like supply and motor transport. Consequently they were often left out of the planning loop until the last minute. The complexity of modern communications systems deployed in rapidly changing combat environments demands that commanders have a well integrated command, control and communication system. The 06 designation brought the CommO into a full staff position where they are critical to planning, executing and achieving the mission. process.
I would like to be an Infantry Officer (0302) but I am not sure what my grades have to be to get a NROTC scholarship.
I don’t think there is a minimum GPA requirement to apply. I had a 4.2 when I got the scholarship back in 2009. Scholarships are getting increasingly competitive with budget cuts kicking in. Here are the MINIMUM test scores you need to apply (you only need to take one):
SAT: 1000 Combination of Math and Critical Reading Only
ACT minimum composite score of 22
Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT): 74
The selection board also considered PFT score, extracurricular activities, etc. The best thing you can do is talk to your local OSO. They will know what kind of profile is getting scholarships these days.
Thank you first and foremost for doing this thread sir.
I am seriously considering making a career as a USMC Officer, with that being said, I do have a criminal record. My OSO ensured me that there are proper waivers available to clear me through to PLC. I am a college sophomore at the moment. My question to you sir; would my criminal record (no violent charges/felonies/heinous crimes) affect my career down the line in the Marine Corps.
Thank you very much for your time sir, I have learned very much by reading this page.
-Liam
The only impact it may have latter on is if your trying to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance. So, you can basically count Intelligence MOSs out as being an option. Obtaining TS is an in-depth process and a I’ve seen people get denied simply because their in-laws were not U.S. citizens. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you get a waiver, it shouldn’t ever come back to bite you except for what was mentioned.
Good to know from someone with experience on the subject. Thank you for your time sir, you are doing a great thing helping out all the people on this thread.
I wish to become a logistics Officer (0402) but I must ask which classes in collage I should take, and which collage. to further improve my chances of getting and performing such a job. If all else fails I would like to become an Infantry Officer, if possible could the classes apply to both jobs? Thank you if you can or can’t give me an answer.
MOS selection is based on your performance at TBS. Your degree/classes have no impact on the selection process. If you want logistics do well at TBS. It is a highly desired MOS, but there are usually 20-30 slots available.
Not exactly what I meant, to put what I meant in other words. What classes would help with my performance on the TBS? And could you list the collages that offer such classes?
I have most of the TBS classes on this site: http://usmcofficer.com/the-basic-school/training-phases/
However, academics only make up about 30% of your grade. Leadership is 40% and military skills in another 30%. There’s really no way to prepare for the majority of the challenges you will face at TBS.
Great questions! I’m going to write another article with more detail. Check back later.
I’m not sure whether I want to be in the Marine Corp my entire career or just stay in for a little bit. If I do stay in my entire career, I want to be a MARSOC officer. If I decide I do not not want to stay in, I still want to become an officer, but I want a MOS that will help me get a really good job outside of the military. I know air traffic controllers make a lot of money. What else would be a good choice. Thank you very much. I’m leaving for boot camp on the 30th of November. Semper fi!
Air traffic controllers do get a lot of great certifications. Most career paths have a similar civilian counterpart. It just depends on what you want to do for the rest of your life.
I have a question what MOS should I seek that would match my undergraduate degree in political science and my masters from the citdal in International politics and military affairs. I want something with intelligence.
Intelligence is highly competitive and will require a good ranking at TBS. Your degree won’t have any impact on the selection process.
If I were to apply for Ground Intelligence Officer (0203), what should I expect to be doing? Why I go out and qualify as a sniper? I heard that I would be placed in charge of a siper/recon unit. I also heard from a former marine on an online forum that I would be placed incharge of the unit but that I would mostly be off to the side.
Also, as I progress what should I expect to be doing?
If I am going to a four year college to be an officer. Would I have to take the majors and study for that specific officer job? or can I take any major and still go in as a officer? I am planning to be a PAO.
Major doesn’t have any impact on the selection process. Study whatever you want.
Ultimate goal is to make Recon Marine Officer. Is 0302 standard pathway or would be leg up to pursue 0203 intel as it is more rigorous/broad training? I know Recon must be earned but need advice on how to pursue from square one please sir?
There are several ways to Recon/MARSOC. You can get there from almost any MOS. Recon/MARSOC needs communications, logistics, intel, etc. just as much as the rest of the Marine Corps. 0302/0203 are both great options as well.
Thank you sir for your time. If I pursue Ground Intel as reserve officer in hopes to become a recon marine after training is completed, what happens next after completion of OCS, TBS and MOS schools for Intel (Infantry, scout sniper, and ground intell)? My nearest USMC reserve station is 4th Logistics Group in Springfield Oregon 222 miles or 3 hr 52 minutes drive so will I end up reporting here and if so under what MOS or the 4th Force Recon BN in Alameda CA is 369 miles (6hr 38 min) would I report there? I am isolated in Northern California between the two and a long way from both. In my case, as a reservist how does this work for me and the corps?
Sorry sir, poorly written above. My main confusion is the RESERVE option. What base will I report to? Do I have to choose an MOS according to the USMC reserve base that is nearest home for me? Would I be required to move my family to be closer to a base appropriate for 0203 MOS or will the corps fly me where I need to go for Drill and summer training? And also, can I even pursue Recon/MARSOC as reservist. Thank you in advance!
I don’t have enough knowledge regarding reservist to answer your questions. I think it’s very unlikely that you will be able to pursue Recon/MARSOC/Intel as a reservist.
I’ve got a few questions about the reserve opprotunities for officers in the Marine Corps. I know major doesn’t effect what jobs you can do but as far as more difficult degrees do they take that into consideration for the boards when viewing GPA. My GPA is currently 3.3 for Electrical Engineering which is one of the harder degrees at my school to obtain. From what I’ve heard for the boards to be competitive you need a 3.0-3.5 is that true? Also last I saw Marines can only pilot in the reserves if they’ve already been an active duty pilot, is that still the case? I am currently in the Marine Reserves as a 1341 and am using my Montgomery G.I. Bill, as a reserve officer are their additional benefits for education; I want to get my masters/doctorite at some point in my life. Thanks in advance!
I don’t know the stats from the boards, but from my experience 3.3 is competitive.
I’ve never heard of a flight contract for a reservist.
There are absolutely higher education programs for officers. You can try and get into the Naval Postgraduate School as well.
I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly! In that case how long of a contract do people usually sign for active duty pilots in the Marine Corps? From what I’ve read it tends to be 8-10 years? I don’t know if thats accurate or not however? If you sign an aviation contract you’re guarentee’d a shot at getting that MOS is that correct?
Sir we spoke above and I could not ‘reply’ again so new thread, I apologize for so many questions. You last said, “you think it’s very unlikely that [I] will be able to pursue Recon/MARSOC/Intel as a reservist” and that is totally understandable. In that case if I end up choosing active duty would that be 4 year commitment as officer? and would I be able to resign contract in Reserves after completing active tour? I only ask as I have a wife and two kids and I don’t think I will have their blessing on this service commitment if it becomes a career for me. Thank you sir!
Yes, it’s usually a 4 year commitment with an additional 4 years in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). Being in the IRR is like being a civilian, no drill, no uniforms, no haircuts.
What officer mos(s) are assigned to ANGLICO?
None, as far as I know.
Artillery, infantry, and pilots with strike backgrounds all have billets in ANGLICO units. These are typically officers who demonstrate combat proficiency with directing fires by serving in a combat support unit, fires control team, or joint air tactical air control positions.
Can you first become an officer and then move into investment banking?
Strange question. Once you get out you can do whatever you want.
I’m looking into applying for OCC in the future. I am interested in the MOS’s in Aviation Command and Control, especially Air Traffic Control (although I like the sound of them all). However, I have color deficiency in my vision and cannot pass the Ishihara test (the one with the numbers and dots). My color vision is something that doesn’t restrain me though. I can tell colors apart and wouldn’t have known I was even color blind if not for that test. Is there a different color blindness test that they administer for those hopeful for Aviation Command and Control careers? Thanks.
Not as far as I know.
I am still contemplating on either being a Combat Engineer(1371) or a Combat Engineer Officer(1302). Advise on how to choose?
Do you want to go to college? If so, I would say go the officer route if leading Marines is something you aspire to do. However, the officer route will not guarantee you a slot as a Combat Engineer.
Not sure if this question was asked or not but is the Intel MOS available to reservists? And are there any MOS that Marine Corps Officers can’t do as reservists?
I personally don’t know anyone that has gotten Intel and been a reservist.
Would a degree (BS) in Criminal Justice have any impact as a Military Police Officer or Communications Officer?
It is not taken into consideration during the MOS selection process. The Marine Corps will teach you what you need to know to be proficient in your MOS. If you have prior knowledge, it just makes the training process easier for you.
What are the MOS’ that are usually the most available out of TBS?
You can get an idea on this page
With low performance scores at TBS what are the most commonly assigned MOS?
A low ranking can still get you a highly desired MOS because of the way they do quality distribution. The only exceptions are going to be the Intel MOSs and some of the other low density fields.
Hey,
I am wondering how I can get stationed in quantico or in the Virginia area. Do I get to pick where I want to be stationed? Or what MOS should I be looking into?
You get to put in preferences for duty station: West Coast, East Coast, or Overseas. The East Coast includes Quantico, but it is VERY UNLIKELY that you will get stationed there as a first duty station. In my class of 200 we had 1 person get Quantico.
Sir, if i become an infantry officer would i be “pulling the trigger” at any point because i wanna fight like my Marines to a certain extent.
I can you that you will get to fire a lot of weapons at The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course. Aside from that, it’s really going to be dependent on your unit, and the type of training YOU develop for the platoon. With that being said, Marines want an officer to lead them, not get in their way.
What officer MOS would you suggest for someone who has always wanted to become a marine officer but doesn’t want their mother to kill herself worrying about me being on the front lines? I’ve been thinking about joining after I finish graduate school but I don’t want my mother worrying herself to death thinking I’m going to be kicking in the doors of terrorists and enemy’s of our country. I want to do anything to serve my country, but I also want to respect my mother considering she is extremely important to me and she’s the one who brought me into this world. I know being a marine entails that there is always the possibility of danger, but are there MOS’s that might give my mother some ease at night? If so, could you suggest some for me to look into?
There are MOSs that are perceived as being less dangerous, but the reality is that a Marine in any MOS can deploy. If your looking for something that sounds less dangerous then Adjutant, Comptroller, and Public Affairs fit that profile. That doesn’t mean they won’t deploy to combat zones, or be in dangerous parts of the world.
Good afternoon Sir,
My son just completed TBS and was assigned logistics for his MOS.
Can you please tell me some of what his responsibilities might be?
Sir,
How do MOS selection work after TBS for reservists? Thank you for your time.
I’m not exactly sure how it works. I do know that a lot of reservist end up getting Communications.
How does the MECEP (Marine Enlisted Commissioning Educational Program) Work? I am highly interested in this path because it was recommended to me. In addition to that, I want to know how would that work out as a Combat Engineer (1317) or Artillery.
Thanks.
MECEP is going to be a long and competitive road to becoming an officer. Your looking at 5+ years in the enlisted ranks before being eligible to even apply. If becoming an officer is your end goal then getting a degree first and doing OCC is a much better option. Or, doing PLC while enrolled in college. MOS selection is done at The Basic School once you have commissioned. There is absolutely nothing you can do right now to further your chances of getting a specific MOS (unless you want to be a pilot).
For the Platoon Leaders Course, How will that be essential towards a career in the USMC? Right now, I’m a High School Student and a part-time Community College student. My goals now, Is to enlist after I get my AS to gain some experience before heading out to the officer route. I currently have no intentions of being a Pilot. However, I want to know what would be the best course in my position.
I am very interested in the marine corps military police MOS. But within that i would like to be a military Police K-9 handler. Is there a way to be an officer and be a K-9 handler without being enlisted
No. As an officer, your focus will be on understanding all of the capabilities available to you (e.g., K-9’s) and knowing how to properly employ them to accomplish the mission.
Are the any MOS restrictions for officer candidates who are colorblind?
You would be unqualified to be a Naval Aviator or Naval Flight Officer. You would still be eligible for ground MOS’.
I’m trying to get into the U.S. Naval academy for the Marine Corps to become a JAG, now i don’t know if USNA provides Law. My question is do i have to attend a law school if they don’t or does they Corps provide classes?,
If you go to the Naval Academy your only guarantee is that you’ll be a Navy Officer. During the final year at the Naval Academy, Midshipman get to apply for other options such as Marine Officer, Navy/Marine Pilot, Navy/Marine Lawyer, etc. If you get selected to be a Marine Lawyer you would then go to law school after graduating and commissioning. The Marine Corps does not pay for law school, it’s on your own dime. Once you graduate law school you go to The Basic School and after graduating from there you will hit the fleet as a JAG.
I want to be Helicopter Pilot in the future and I was wondering if you are JUST a pilot or are you going to be responsible for other Marines sometime in your career?
You won’t have Marines for several years while in training, and when you do their not going to be large platoons.
Within the Intelligence Officer MOS does one get to choose whether they get ground, human, etc.? Or are they assigned based on the needs of the Corps?
You can compete for four intelligence MOSs at The Basic School: Signals, Human, Ground, and Air.
Hey ,
Im leaving for OCS in september 2016 . Looking into places that marines get stationed. Would you happen to know if there any places near chicago, illinois that they would possiby get stationed?
It’s unlikely that you would get stationed at any of those locations for your first tour. Possibly for your second tour if you want to be an officer recruiter.
It’s unlikely that you would get stationed there for your first fleet tour. Possibly for your second tour if you want to be an officer recruiter.
Hello sir, I just wanted to start off by saying thank you for your service and all the information you have been providing. I’m 19 years old and currently planning to start the PLC course and after my military career I plan to become a California Fish & Game Warden. I want to get a bachelors in Environmental Science and I was wondering if that would relate to a certain MOS. I’m having a difficult time choosing a MOS and was wondering if the PLC training will help me determine my choice or if you may have some suggestions. All I know is the military is what I have always wanted to pursue, all aspects and challenges of the Corps I admire.
Seth,
Your degree has NO impact on the MOS selection process. PLC won’t help you decide, but after PLC you will go of The Basic School for Basic Officers Course. During those 6 months, you will have the opportunity to meet with Marines from every possible MOS (over 20 possibilities). Around month 4 is when you put in your preferences. The selection process is based on your ranking and performance at TBS. You are competing against your peers!
Good luck at PLC. Train hard and never give up!
Thank you sir, much respect.
Thank you sir, much respect.
I was wondering what the responsibilities of a scout sniper platoon commander were and how obtain selection for that course.
You would compete for the Ground Intelligence Officer MOS at The Basic School.
As a MAGTF Intelligence officer what type of things would someone be faced with..
Like what type of responsibilities and task would one be faced with as a MAGTF intelligence Officer?
I noticed that logistics was a highly sought after MOS, but ground supply, and aviation supply highly undesirable. In your personal opinion, why is that?
quick question: The location of the additional schooling per MOS is listed here, but is there any way to know where you will possibly be stationed after the school. I’m looking to be stationed on the west coast, but I know the MOS schools on the west coast don’t necessarily guarantee West Coast stationing.
No. It all depends on where there are open positions.
Is there any way of knowing the amount of open positions prior to selecting the MOS? Will the CO or anyone else release this information by request?
Is there any way of knowing the amount of open positions per MOS prior to selecting the MOS? Will the CO or anyone else release this information by request?
Yes, you will get a breakdown of how many slots there are for each MOS.
Sir, are there MOS’s in the Officer Corps that promote faster than others? I know in the enlisted community there are…
Generally no. You will go from 2ndLt to 1stLt after 2 years time in grade. After about 2 years as a 1stLt you will get a number which indicates when you will promote to Captain, and that number is based on performance at The Basic School. From Captain to Major and beyond, it’s based on board selections. There are rank caps for certain MOSs, but those are at the General officer level.
Back again! Do you have any insight on the new tattoo policy. I’m awaiting the status of a tattoo waiver, but the policy was changed in the midst of the approval. Under the new policy, I am within regs. Will this affect my waiver approval or need for a waiver?
It’s going to depend on where in the administrative process your waiver was at. If it comes back denied, you can resubmit and have it reviewed under the new policy. If it comes back approved then you are good to go. Once a tattoo is documented and waived it becomes grandfathered into whatever the policy was at the time. That’s why you’ll see old Gunnery Sergeants with full sleeves on both arms!
Good to go. My waiver actually hot approved a couple of days after posting this. Not sure which policy it was filed under, I’m just happy to finally have signed my contract. Thank you sir.
I am very interested in Becoming a Human Source Intelligence Officer (0204) I believe. I know that after you complete TBS you make a list of your preferred MOS, but is there anyway to garuntee what MOS you will be assigned? Any info you can provide on the MOS selection process would be very helpful. Thanks.
The #1 ranked Marine in their TBS class is guaranteed their first choice MOS. Everyone else, except for flight/law contracted Marines, are at the mercy of the selection process. In my opinion 0204 is the single most competitive MOS. My class had 2 slots and over 50 Marines had it in their top 5. I believe the two that got the slots were ranked in the top 10 of our Company.
What is the ” easiest ” officer job and the most strenuous officer job.
Being a Marine officer is tough no matter where you end up. Infantry is physically challenging. Communications is intellectually challenging. Pilots are tested in all sorts of ways. Adjutants have incredibly stressful work and little room for error. At the end of the day, most of your time is going to be spent taking care of Marines no matter what MOS.
Also is there anything different about being an officer with glasses. Or not 20/20 vision?
No. Unless you want to be a pilot.
Sir,
I was wondering how you can go in the reserves as an officer and if not what the best choice would be for less of the action on the battle areas?
Hello,
I am doing some research into my family and trying to figure out some info regarding my grandfather Major Charles Offutt’s USMC service. The only thing o can find out from my grandmother is that he was in aviation as a back seat gunner, and then shifted to recon photography during the Cold War. From my understanding his job was to fly low and fast to get shot at and photograph the AA guns so clean up crews could come wipe them out. Do you possibly know what aircraft that would have been and what his MOS might have been. Or do you possibly have a site that I could find his service on? I appreciate any info you might have on this, thanks much.
Respectfully,
Steve
Sir,
How would you get in to OCS or PLC and how long would it be till you become a Second Lieutenant.
Sincerely,
Tanner
Scout Sniper?
You can be a Scout Sniper Platoon Commander if you go Ground Intelligence
What is the least wanted MOS
Most don’t want administrative type MOSs like adjutant or comptroller. But those are also low density MOSs, so the few that do want them are still competing with each other.
My brother is a Lance Corporal in Security Forces stationed at 8th and I waiting for his presidential clearance to come through. I also would like to obtain the clearance, and be apart of Security Forces but as an officer. Is that possible?
In short. No.
Hello,
I’m thinking about becoming either a logistics officer or military police officer. I was wondering what kind of experience would a person like me need to be a military police officer?
Thank you for your service to our country
No matter what your background is, the Marine Corps will teach you how to do your job. So if MP is what you want, work your butt off to get it.
Can you put embassy security guard officer and scout sniper platoon leader on here, please.
Embassy Security Guard is not an MOS. It is a special duty assignment that is rarely available to officers. Scout Sniper Platoon Leaders are sourced from Ground Intelligence Officer. You have to first go Ground Intel and then compete to move to Scout Snipers.
What is the difference between an Infantry Officer and a enlisted infantryman?
As an Infantry Officer, you are in charge of an Infantry Platoon that contains Infantry Marines (new gender neutral official MOS title).
I am currently in a community college with a 3.9 gpa and I want to transfer to a 4 year to earn a bachelor’s degree to become a Marine Officer. I can’t afford a University without going into debt, so I was wondering if and what types of programs I could follow to have a paid for by the military education before becoming an officer.
Through the NROTC program you can get a full ride scholarship with a monthly stipend for living expenses and yearly stipend for books. More information on applying can be found here.
Hello,
When joining the reserves, does one get help with pas student debt? I still have student debt from a masters degree that I have already completed.
Thank you!
Can you switch from one Mos to another.
Yes, in a sense. There are numerous programs that allow you to change MOSs or transition to a different community. For instance, a few officers can get picked up for flight school and become pilots. You could go to the Naval Post Graduate school and become a Foreign Area Officer (technically your MOS doesn’t change, but you don’t do anything in your MOS as a FAO), and then there’s Marine Corps Special Operations.
Bottom line, don’t expect to be able to change MOSs as an officer, but if you dislike your field there are opportunities to do something else.
Can a Marine Officer become a navy seal.
What are the pros and cons of infantry Officer and aviation and which one of these two Mo’s do you reccomend in terms of leadership and command.
Good morning sir,
I noticed the length of IOC is longer for ground intel than infantry officers, what is the reason for the length difference ?
I’m not completely sure. I’ll leave the question open for infantry/intel officers to answer.
Is it possible to enlist in the Reserves, and as you’re going through college, go to PLC or OCS and commission Active Duty?
Yes, it is absolutely possible and common.
I am interested in becoming a Combat Engineer Officer. I am curious though about the day to day duties as well as the most combat I should expect?
The day to day for an officer can be summed up to 1) Taking care of Marines (legal matters, financial issues, personal lives, counselings, etc.) and 2) Planning
With regards to combat, it’s going to be dependent on so many factors that it isn’t even worth discussing. If you want to be an officer, take things one step at a time and don’t worry so much about the future.
Good evening sir,
I have been thinking of applying to ocs and I am currently employed by a financial company. I have a background in finance/business management, I noticed that the corps has financial management mos’s. Are those positions typically more favorable by some reservists or so many not really know of them? My last question really has to do with deployment. If given the opportunity for that type of mos, what is the likelihood that you would get deployed?
Thank you for your time!
Hi Steven,
MOS selection will be based on your performance at The Basic School. There’s usually only one or two slots for Comptroller so it does end up being competitive. Marines in all MOSs can be deployed. It’s more dependent on what unit your part. There are budgets to be maintained everywhere we go!
Good evening sir,
I have been looking into applying for ocs. I currently work for a financial institution and hold a bachelors in business management with concentration in finance. I understand that the corps has mos’s in finance. How often are those sought out by potential candidates? My last question pertains to deployments. If given an opportunity for that type of mos, how likely is it to be deployed?
Anything for 0370?
You can’t get to MARSOC straight out of TBS. There are other pipelines to become spec ops.
Clearly a lot of weight is put on PFT performance, and as such I was wondering what your personal experience was preparing for it before ever heading off to become a marine?
The Marine Corps will be implementing new standards starting in 2017 that you should read up on. Most officers will max out the crunches and pullups. Best advice there is to do them every day. To this day, I crank out 200-400 pullups a week and 500+ crunches. Just do 50-100 pullups 3-4 times a week in small sets and 100 crunches every time you wake up. For the run, I recommend trying out one of Hal Higdons training programs. It’s what I use the months leading up to a PFT.
Sir,
I am relatively proficient in four different languages and can learn new languages very quickly and easily. I have wanted to go into linguistics for the military, but I’m not seeing that as an option above. Is that an enlisted position only, or is there an MOS which would include learning and using a new language? I know CI could be an option, but are there any other jobs besides that?
Thank you.
There’s no officer MOS related to language learning. However, you can become a Foreign Area Officer (FAO) later on in your career. More info can be found at http://www.faoa.org/FAO-What-is-a-FAO
Good Day Sir,
I am unsure if this question was already asked. At what stage in TBS are the officers assigned the MOS?
Respectfully,
Sgt. R.
About a month before graduation.
I plan on being a structural engineer and becoming a marine corps officer. I want a mos that will make me use my college degree extensively and act as an engineer. What mos should i do for that?
The closet thing I can think of is Combat Engineering, but you’ll probably only use a small percentage of what you learned in school. Being a Marine officer means your mostly focused on leadership, developing training for Marines, and administrative work.
Good Afternoon,
Is Infantry Officer a popular selection, therefore making it unlikely to get that pick in TBS? Unless you do well in TBS.
The staff will usually only select those they believe can make it through Infantry Officers Course. If your a PT stud, you have a much better chance.
How about METOC Officer, 6802? How competitive is this field?
That’s a Navy specialty, not Marine.
The last I heard from my gf was mid October she said she was in Afghanistan headed to i believe the border of Iraq? She said we were not going to be able to talk for a while because there wasn’t going to n any survice she said she was going to write me if I wrote her I’ve sent her a letter every month since we last talked in mid October and I have not heard anything from her at all nore have I received any letters. I would really just like to know if she’s ok and if she is still working?
You should contact the Family Readiness Officer for your friends unit.
How does Job selection work for officers? I plan on applying for ROTC within the next couple months. Is it similar to enlisted where you sign a general field contract such as 02xx or 03xx?
For officers there are “Ground” contracts and “Air” contracts. With ROTC, everyone starts out as a Ground contract and they can apply for Air during their Junior/Senior years. Ground contracts compete for MOS selection at TBD.
Is there any marine officer MOS that work mostly on ships
No, but you can get billets later on in your career that has direct involvement with Marine / Navy integration.
I’m a senior getting ready to graduate Spring 2017. I am considering USMC Officer Reserve. I want to complete my Masters soon. Are there any case where there’s flexibility that would allow me to complete OCS, TBS, and MOS School during the summers when I am not school?
OCS can be done during the summers. There NO option for doing TBS/MOS school on weekends. You will have to complete those while on active duty and after completing MOS school you get stationed at a reserve unit.
Hello,
When joining the reserves, what does the timeline look like and what kind of work does one do during drill weekends?
Also, is there some sort of way to pick an MOS that would land you a job at a reserve unit near where you live and have your house and day job?
Thanks!
Good Afternoon,
Are there any MOS Roadmaps created for Warrant Officers and fully commissioned officers by chance? I know they exist for the enlisted side but, was not entirely sure on the “O” side? Thanks.
Each Warrant officer field has a career path unique to the field. If you are currently enlisted, I would recommend you read the MARADMIN on requirements to apply for a Warrant officer commission.
What officer pilot jobs are there
While at flight school you compete for the type of aircraft you want to fly C-130, UH-1, AH-1, AV-8, MV-22, CH-53’s, RQ-21, etc.
When you meet with you OSO, did you bring up a list of MOS placements you wanted? What are the chances of getting the MOS that you want?
You compete for MOS at The Basic School. The only options your OSO can present to you are Ground contract and Air contract. Air contract means you want to be a Pilot or Naval Flight Officer. Ground contract is everything else.
Great. Thank you, sir.
How difficult is it to acquire a law contract? Are judge advocates respected? Do they have differing options for ascension after tour 1?
Thank you
Is it possible for a newly commissioned officer with prior enlisted time to be an LDO within their current MOS?
No. The LDO career path has its own selection process.
For 02xx MOSs, I was told that by although I am US citizen birth, by having foreign born parents born in a “high risk country” (think China, Iraq, Russia) I am automattically disqualified because I cannot get an interim TS/SCI for intelligence MOS school. Is this true and if so, is there a work around?
Yes. It is more difficult to get a TS/SCI if you have parents or even in-laws that came from other countries. If they are not U.S. citizens, or hold dual citizenship you won’t even get looked at for an 02xx MOS.
On average, per class, how many slots are usually available for ATC (Air Traffic Control) and what are the qualifications to qualify for such a slot?
Usually only 1 or 2. There are no special qualifications. You compete as you do all the other MOSs.
Sir,
If you have amblyopia of the right eye does it hinder you from going in to OCS or any other military services?
What tasks does a human intelligence officer do involving indigenous people in foreign lands, what work goes into being a human intelligence officer, and what jobs in the private sector are you eligible for?
Hello again, Sir.
If a candidate, for whatever reasons, is taken out of his OCS Program, what would the process to reapply be?
Officer,
What all does the Scout Sniper Platoon Commander position entail?
As a Scout Sniper Platoon Commander, your primary duty is as a Ground Intelligence Officer. Your unit will be used to gather information on targets and provide over watch for ground forces.
Hello sir, Do ground itelligence officers or logistic officers see combat? Also how exactly can one become a scout sniper platoon commander?
Every Marine can potentially see combat. It depends on the unit you become assigned to and whether or not you ever get the chance to deploy. You need to go Ground Intel to become a Scout Sniper Platoon Commander.
For Intel Ground Officer, do you go to all three MOS schools listed, or do you pick / get assigned one of them?
Also, if you list your #1 as something difficult like infantry, and get selected for that MOS, and don’t pass the MOS school for it, do you just get reassigned an MOS based on the needs of the Corps? I understand that you may not know the answer to this but any info would be appreciated.
Also, do you know which MOS’ are the most competitive? And the least competitive?
Thank you so much!
Ground Intel Officers do IOC and Intel School, the Scout Sniper course is if you’re going to a Scout Sniper unit. If you fail the school you will be reassigned as you stated. You can get an idea of competitive using this breakdown from a few years ago.
How quickly can you become an instructor after becoming an officer?
For most ground MOSs, you can become an instructor once you hit Captain. I’ve seen most instructor go back to the school house on their second Supporting Establishment tour which put them at about 6 years.
Sir,
Do Infantry Officer Candidates have to take both IOC and LAV Leaders Course?
No just IOC.
Thank you
Hello,
I’m planning in pursuing to be a Marine Officer. How competitive or likely will it be, to get Air Craft Maintenance? Will I be able to do hands on work?
I always wanted to know, if I do get Air Craft Maintenance, will I be able to be on ships/carriers?
Thank you,
Manny
Your competitiveness is dependent upon performance at The Basic School. You will never be “hands on” with the maintenance process. There are Marines trained specifically to work on specific parts of each type of aircraft. I’ve worked with Aviation Maintenance officers before and they mainly deal with tracking maintenance, briefing higher ups, and figuring out how to get parts.
Yes, you can deploy with a Marine Expeditionary Unit which will have you working on a ship for about a year.
Which ground MOSs are colorblind officers medically disqualified from?
Hello,
On this site it states that Aviation Intel Officer Course is only 8 weeks long in DamNeck, VA. Is that accurate?
Thank you.
Hello sir
I am going to be a freshman in college and am very interested in the PLC program and was wondering if you could give me advice on the best place to start or how to get the process started
Ean,
You will need to find the nearest OSO and they will start the application process. If you’re not sure where to go, fill out the form on the Marine Recruiting website and they will give you a call.
Which MOS’s would you say would be a good fit for someone studying engineering in college? (Not computer science, but like chemical or mechanical engineering?) Asking because I enjoy engineering in general.
Also, are there certain MOS’s that will lead to a higher chance of being stationed in the US?
Thanks!
As someone who has an engineering degree, there’s really no MOS that will directly leverage those skills. The Marine Corps will teach you what you need to know no matter what the MOS. Just about everyone coming out of TBS will get stationed on the West Coast, East Coast, or Overseas (Hawaii/Okinawa/Iwakuni).
How much say do new officers get in where they are stationed, if they have any say at all? And are there certain MOS’s that are stationed in more places than another?
Most officers will know their duty station coming out of TBS. The exceptions are Communications Officer who will compete for duty station at their MOS school, and Pilots/NFOs who get stationed based on the Type/Model/Series aircraft they get selected to fly.
There are Marine officers from every MOS stationed across the world. Special considerations are given under certain circumstances such as family issues (e.g., you have a child who need specialized medical treatment from within the U.S.), active duty spouse location, etc.
Are there any MOSs that are non deployable, or less likely to be deployed for Officers? Something more family friendly?
No, every officer has the potential to deploy.
Hello,
What type of MOS is more in line with administrative work? You said that there are very few slots for Comptrollers/Finance managers, but what about Adjudants? And is Adjudant a less-regarded position?
Thank you.
Adjutants deal with a lot of legal matters and review all paperwork before it goes to the XO and CO. It’s not heavily sought after, but since there’s only a few slots it can still be competitive.
I’m looking on going to college to become an officer, right now in high school my strengths academically are science, math, and I’m doing very well in a CTE TV/Video/Film class. Are there any MOS’s that correspond to that last one?
Cyrus,
It’s great to hear you are considering a career as a Marine officer. The best advice I can give you is to focus on what’s in front of you. MOS selection is potentially 5-7 years away from where you are at right now. Step one is to figure out the path you want to take to become a Marine officer (NROTC, PLC, OCC) and focus on getting all the requirements completed and making yourself competitive both academically and physically.
Thanks so much for this forum. It’s been a great help since so much info out there about USMC is either vague or resorts to “contact your local OSO.” My question is whether or not there is an officer MOS for linguistics. I am a college grad with several critical languages under my belt, and if possible I’d like to learn another while leveraging those skills in my job field. It seems as though most translators for all branches are only enlisted positions.
Daniel,
There is no office MOS in Linguistics. However, after 3-4 years as a Marine officer you can apply for the Foreign Area Officer (FAO) program. You would get to go to the Naval Postgraduate School to learn additional languages (a language you don’t already know) and then you become specialized in a certain region of the world. This is a secondary MOS, so you would spend your career rotating between your primary MOS and FAO related billet.
I have a quick question in regards to switching from an air to a ground contract. My true desire is to sign a ground contact. However, my OSO and OSA are pushing me to take the ASTB and sign for an air contract. They say the reason for this is that my chances of getting selected for OCS automatically doubles since the Marine Corps is in need of pilots, and once I get to TBS, I can easily switch to ground. I just wanted to ask if this is true, and if this is common among candidates? Or is it a ploy to get me locked into an air contract?
From what I’ve seen, it’s easy to switch from Air to Ground at TBS. There are always other Marines that want to fill those slots. I’ve even seen Marine officers switch from Air to Ground while at flight school because they realized it wasn’t their passion to be a pilot, or they struggled with the curriculum.
Thank you for the reply sir! Luckily, I was able to convince my OSO to let me contract as active duty Ground, so I will be competing for selection into OCC 228 this summer!
What is the closest to machinist (2161) post-PLC?
There is nothing close.
Dear sir,
Firs of all, thank you for your service! Secondly, I am a going to be graduating college this coming spring and am looking to do fall (2018) OSC! I am currently looking for a sponsor to take my series 7 exam and become a licensed currency broker/trader! I was wondering if there are any MOS’s within the financial managment field of the marines which correlate to such a position?! I am aware of the accounting positions the marine corps has, but just wanted to know if there are other options?!
Thank you
There isn’t any MOS that is going to correlate. The best part about being a Marine officer is having the privilege to teach, mentor, and guide young Marines. Regardless of MOS, you can use your knowledge to empower the Marines in your charge.
Do you need an air contract for Air Intel? Also, as far as you know, what is the daily life of an MP officer like?
Thanks so much!
No, Air Intel is a ground MOS and does not require a contract.
Are there any MOSs that you can get to be stationed in South Carolina? Or that are most likely to be stationed in SC? I know that it is ultimately up to the needs of the Marine Corps. Thanks!
I don’t know of any billets you could fill as a junior officer. Once you finish up your first fleet tour you can try to become a Marine Officer Instructor (MOI) at one of the schools in the state with an NROTC program.
MCRD Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort.
I am fluent in French, what MOS would I be most likely to use my French with?
There is no linguist MOS for officers. Once you have a few years as a Marine officer you can be considered to become a Foreign Area Officer which will make use of language skills.
As a 1302, would I be deployed as Logistics or Infantry?
You deploy as a Logistic Officer if your a Logistics Officer. You deploy as an Infantry Officer if your an Infantry Officer. What you actually do on deployment is dependent on the billet your filling.
As an Infantry Officer and upon completion of the LAV Leaders Course, would that Marine Officer be a crewmember on the LAV? Also, are AAV and Tank Officers crew members of their respective vehicles? Thank you!
You would be in charge of a platoon of Marines and vehicles. Ride wherever you want.
Do Air Intel officers sit around a lot when their not deployed. What do they do on a normal work day. Sit around or move
Which MOSs are for females? I know some of them arn’t for females. And which MOSs are most popular for females?
All MOSs are open to females so long as you complete the required training. There are still some restriction with SOCOM.
What type of Marine officer flies UAV/UAS aircraft ?
7315 is an emerging MOS from just the last few years.
As a college graduate with bachelors degree, upon completion of OCS are desired MOS guaranteed?
No, you have to compete at TBS with everyone else.
what percentage do I need to pass the asvab for officer Military Police, or Infantry Officer. I only have one month left to finish my BA and I would like to know what to do to become one
I’m aware that the Navy has meteorologist and oceanographic officers, but does the marine corps have meteorologist officers? I understand that having an oceanographic officer position in that branch of the navy would be kind of pointless becuase they have the Navy for that on board ships, but I’m curious about meteorology.
No. There are no Marine meteorologist officers. On the enlisted side, we do have weather specialist.
I did four years active duty and now want to become an Intel officer. How many years for an Intel contract for both active and reserves?
Any jobs in Intel not guarantee for reservist or do both Active Duty and Reserves qualify for the same.
Thanks
Intel is a low density MOS. The likelihood of getting selected to be an Intel officer as a reservist is slim, but I won’t say impossible. Ground contracts are four years in most cases, five for Naval Academy grads.
Can a Marine military police officer be in CID?
CID is separate process you can apply for later.
I plan to be a social worker in the marine corps. Is that even a possible officer MOS for the marines or not? please email me and let me know.
I like to say that every officer is a social worker. You will work with Marines from all walks of life with personal, financial, mental, and family issues. As their officer, you will help guide, mentor, and find them resources. There is no specific MOS, but it’s a useful skill to have.
PAO and ComCam MOS’ have merged (see MARADMIN 484/17). Now all are 45xx.
Can Marine Officers be involved in linguistics or translators? If not, does being bilingual benefit an Officer at all?
You can’t be a linguist/translator. Yes, knowing other languages can be extremely helpful for your career. You cant test out for a language and get extra pay and it also looks good if you want to try and do the FAO (Foreign Area Officer) program later in your career. With FAO, you will get to earn a Masters and learn a new language.
Is it accurate to say that if you’re a marine option NROTC midshipman and your college major is computer science, and you wish to become a Cyberspace Officer or Cyberspace Warfare Development Officer, the OML no longer is an issue? If true, approximately how many MOS’s bypass the OML while in NROTC?
You must compete for MOS selection regardless of background. Every stay who does the slating of officers has a different mindset. It’s best to try your hardest and make your Staff Platoon Commander aware of what you want.
Is there any MOS similar to a parachute rigger (0451) for officers?
Negative.
I have heard that after OCS it is very competitive to get an Infantry officer MOS. Is this true and is there anyway to improve my chances?
Thank You
MOS selection is done at TBS, not OCS. Infantry can be competitive. Physical fitness is a huge factor when the staff selects Infantry officers. The Infantry Officer Course is brutal and has a significant failure rate. Particularly, being able to hikes with 100+ pounds over several days is something you should be working towards. TBS will help with this!
What are possible of the possible places to be shipped out to with the United States ?
Japan and Hawaii (considered overseas even though it’s in the U.S.) are the most common places. You could also deploy to a number of other places.
I got accepted in PLC Juniors under an aviation contract, I also passed the ASTB. Does this mean that I will be a pilot or fly something upon graduating OCS, TBS, and flight school? Thanks for all you do.
Yes, if you have an Aviation contract you will be a pilot.
As long as you don’t do something to disqualify yourself, like get injured or show that you can’t fly without constantly throwing up. You also have to pass flight school.
Hi! I got accepted for air contract plc juniors, how do you know if it’s for pilot or naval flight officer? Is it a gamble?
Thanks!
How long is the training for AAV Officers, and are they used in the Marine Corps Reserves. Finally, will AAV Officer jobs still be available in about eight years.
About 12 weeks. More info here: https://www.trngcmd.marines.mil/Units/West/Assault-Amphibian-School-Battalion/Assault-Amphibian-Officer-Course/AAOC-Generic-Timeline/
How long is AAV training, and with AAV’s still be used in about ten years. Also, should I go AAV, Infantry, or Artillery Officer. FInally, How long do you have to do college to become an officer, and should I enlist or go officer
Sounds like you’re in High School. First, if you want to go to college (get a Bachelor’s degree) and lead Marines, go for the officer route. If you want to do something new and exciting right away, consider enlisting. It’s a personal choice and you’ll have to weigh the pros/cons.
How do you get into the 1803 mos from NRTOC
You must compete for MOS’s at TBS. You can apply for Aviation while in NROTC, but that’s it.
O602 may oversee other avenues in a new installation as needed. I seen a few stretched a might thin before. Lol true story
If you do NROTC do you still have to do OCS. Can someone tell me how that works????
Yes, NROTC midshipman attend a shorter version of OCS that is only 6-weeks long. NROTC will prepare you for OCS.
Are there MOS’s where you use math or data a good amount? Or anything of that sort?
Also, do you have any info on the day-to-day of ground intelligence officers? I’ve heard they’re a mix of infantry officers and intelligence analysts–is that true? Thank you.
Nothing on here about the RECON “O” route.
Recon isn’t an MOS, it’s a type of unit you can go to.
Probably a silly question, but what’s the likely hood of a someone getting accepted into Officer Program who: 1. Has a DUI charge. 2. A BFA degree 3. Has a previously broken clavicle which still has a titanium plate still intact?
I’m trying to see if I should not waste my time applying for Officer, considering my past history, and go enlisted instead.
If I could still get in, how long would the process take to get waivers for the DUI and broken clavicle?
The DUI charge will be a deal breaker for any service you apply to regardless of officer/enlisted. I’ve seen Marines with 10+ years in get separated after getting a DUI.
What are the contract length options for a USMC Officer?
Four year contracts, five if you commission through the Naval Academy.
Missing Criminal Investigations Officer
CI is not an MOS. It is an additional responsibility that officers from any MOS can be assigned when an investigating officer is needed.
I am looking to work under an MOS that deals with some form of counseling. I was looking into (Field 01, Personnel and Administration) 0149 –Substance Abuse Control Specialist falls under it, on a Military web page I found on google. I’m not sure if any Officer opportunities exist within it. Any recommendations of jobs that I can start looking into as well? Thank you
Great question. Every MOS will put you in charge of Marines who need counseling. You will be one of the first lines of support for a Marine and will work with senior staff, medical, and outside organizations to get Marines support. SACO is a temporary position that enlisted Marines from any MOS can hold. If your Marines has substance abuse issues, you will work with the SACO to get them support.
What Officer MOS overlooks the K-9 Unit? I want to enlist into that field, but after I earn my degree I want to still work around dogs. Is there anyway that is possible?
You won’t work directly with dogs, but they fall other the Military Police MOS. You could have Marines under you that handle the dogs.
Hi,
I’m getting some mixed information that I’m hoping you could clarify for me. I’m looking to either go air intel or signals intel. Do either of those have to go through infantry officer course or is that just for ground intel? Could you also clarify the pipeline for me to get into those MOS’s? Thank you for your time
Air/Signals Intel officers do not go to IOC. In some cases, if there is a delay between graduating TBS and attending Intel school, those officers are allowed to attempt IOC, but it’s rare. To get Intel, be at the top of your class, if not the number one officer. There’s no other secret. Best of luck!
Thanks for all your information it’s really helpful. Are there any officer MOSs in Motor T?
In terms of vehicle repairs, there’s usually a Warrant Officer in charge. However, most MOS’s will put you in charge of vehicles. Logistics Officers have a lot trucks, Communications Officers have comm vehicles, etc.
Which MOS options are available if you are a Reserve Marine Core Officer?
These will vary with your TBS graduating class. They are generally higher density MOSs like communications, logistics, supply, etc.
I was wondering how competitive the mos 1803 (AAV Officer) is to get into. And what are some common places aav officers are stationed?
There’s usually only a few slots. AAV officers will most likely go to an AAV Battalion in Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune.
Any info on Administrative, Management, Analyst MOSs?
Adjutants focus on administrative and legal matters. Intelligence officers could be viewed as analysts, but really there will be analysts working for them and their job is to evaluate information and present recommendations to commanders.
What is the step-by-step process of being becoming a pilot through PLC?
You will want to contact an OSO and apply for a Flight Contract into the Marine Corps. They may try to persuade you to go Ground first and try to get selected as a pilot later on, but I would caution against this if your soul desire is to be a Marine pilot. There are more opportunities to fly in other services if that’s what you want to do.
What about officers for the Air Rescue Firefighting MOS?
I’m not familiar with that MOS, but it’s not an officer MOS. Perhaps, a qualification which pilots can obtain.
If u are a adjutant officer or public affairs officer are u in combat at all or is it like a regular jobs of some sorts
Every Marine has the potential to be in a combat situation. However, the day-to-day for an Adjutant or PAO will be more administrative in nature.
Hello. I was wondering if there is a cyberspace officers MOS?
The Marine Corps recently added a 1702 Cyberspace Operations. See more in the MARADMIN. https://www.marines.mil/News/Messages/Messages-Display/Article/1469004/cyberspace-operations-occupational-field-occfld-17/
What is the best way to become an Aviation Command and Control Officer?
Be the top ranked officer in your graduating class at The Basic School. However, don’t set your sights on a particular MOS. Throughout the selection process you will learn about all of the Marine communities and may decide you want something different.
Current Sergeant of 5 years. End goal would be the 0203 route, but seems to be a difficult topic to find adequate information on. Any resources or location to obtain such material? I.e. prerequisites, physical standards, limitations, preparatory material etc.
Any insight is appreciated and welcomed. Thank you in advance.
It is a competitive MOS and in recent years selected officers had to complete the Infantry Officers Course prior to going to Intel school. With that being said, IOC training cannot be disclosed. As a Sergeant, don’t be concerned with what’s several years away. Focus on being competitive for the MECEP boards, taking college classes on the side, and setting a trajectory towards commissioning first.
How competitive is it to get a slot as a Naval Aviator or NFO?
If you don’t get selected as an Aviator when you first apply, the chances you will be able to get the MOS as The Basic School is very slim.
If an officer begins a MOS training program then want’s to change what would be the best course of action? Should they finish the current training then reapply to switch or is that even possible? If they quit on their own volition, not fail out, would they have the option to reapply to another MOS or would they just be reassigned?
In general, you cannot change your MOS. However, sometimes the Marine Corps will restructure MOS’s and there may be opportunities to apply for a different field.
Which of these MOS are restricted to woment
None.
missing the 0303 LAR O
My daughter has her Masters in Criminal Justice and wants to go the route of CID. Does this MOS fall under the Military Police 5803?
No. She should apply to NCIS.
i see the jobs about aviation command and control. Is there a bigger description of each of those 4 jobs? also do any of those involve operating airfields/ setting up remote airfields?
Airfields are a product of many different MOSs. It depends more on where you are stationed than anything. If you get to the Marine Air Wing, you will be doing airfield all the time.
Any specific MOS that can get me into jump school. Intel or logistics?maybe
There are many paths via different MOSs. Recon would probably be the way to go.
Is there any officer jobs that deal with MWD? Also can you be a military dog handler and also be an officer?
No, officers do the handle dogs. Military Police Officers have handlers who work for them though.
Sir, I am active duty navy in Yokosuka going to the naval academy and I was curious on which particular Marine Officer MOS have high opportunities on getting stationed overseas in areas such as Europe, or Yokosuka japan. I have seen and heard of marine officers in Europe. Thank you sir.
A good chunk of Marines will always get stationed in Japan. European tours are sparse and usually come as “hot fill” billets, meaning anyone can apply for them.
Good morning,
Thank you for your help. I have a bachelor’s degree but have considered enlisting first and then commissioning later. My logic comes from a desire to learn about being a Marine before leading Marines. Will I have to complete an enlisted contract of 6 years before applying for a commission, or can an application be submitted sooner?
Best regards,
Austin
You can apply anytime during your enlisted tour. Seeing as you have a bachelors, why not just apply for OCS?
I heard there is a new MOS for fitness specialist if that is true is there an officer route for that? Also as a graduating student from college what are the basic academic requirements to be selected for OCS. including, SAT, AFQT, etc:
Thank you.
There is no fitness MOS. There are collateral duties that may include coming up with fitness plans for Marines who are overweight, but those are typically enlisted responsibilities.
Is there a way to still become a pilot even if I wear glasses or should I just give up and look for another career goal?
You would need to get eye surgery to correct your vision.
Does the marine corps have the A-10 or just the Air Force?
No.
Can you select a MOS in ammunition or explosive ordinance disposal at TBS? If not, how does a lateral move for these positions work?
Thank you for your time and help, this is a great resource that has helped me learn a lot more about the Corps.
EOD is a Navy occupation.
I want to become a Marine officer through Nrotc, but I want to major in Music Education. Would this hinder my ability to receive the Nrotc scholarship, as I’d not be taking a major relevant to anything I’d do in the military?
Also, what MOS’s would be involved with being at sea or on boats? I love the sea, and therefore the Navy sounds amazing to me, but I’d rather become a Marine Officer, as the Marines still appeal more to me. I suppose I’m asking, how can I get a Naval job, but still be in the Marines?
Marines deploy on Navy ships all the time. This is true of all Marine MOSs. You shouldn’t have any issues majoring in Music. If you decide to go Navy, they do require a technical major.
If I were to receive the NROTC scholarship, go to an NROTC accredited school and study statistics or quantitative economics, would that make me more eligible for a position as a financial management officer once I enter the Marine Corps?
Not necessarily. You have to compete for the MOS through the TBS ranking process.
Good afternoon,
I am a junior in college and would like to commission. I was prior service army infantry. Will that help my chances of getting selected? Also if I wanted an infantry slot at TBS will that help? Thanks
Hard to say. Just apply and see! Your MOS preference won’t be considered in the application process.
Are there officer roles in the 0521 psychological operations military occupational specialty?
No, not in the Marine Corps. Human Intelligence is as close as you will get.
The list of MOS DESIGNATION LISTS JUDGE ADVOCATES AS 4402 – I had a secondary MOS of Legal Officer – not a lawyer but more like the officer who investigates and prepares findings and briefs for the lawyers and commanding Officers. Is there an MOS for that? I’m sure it was in the 4400 series but not 4402.
With the Military Police Officer MOS could I still be a dog handler or would I have to Enlisted to go that route?
Enlisted Marines handle dogs.
Is there a list for secondary MOS? I was thinking about a martial arts of excellence instructor MOS ( have MMA experience) and how competitive it is. Looking into reserves contract if that matters.
Thanks
MMA is not a secondary MOS; rather, it is a certification. There are many officers with MMA instructor certification and several avenues to get there. The earliest this would occur is at TBS, but typically that’s only if you get delayed orders. Units are also able to conduct courses to certify instructors, so this could happen later in your career as well.
Sir,
I noticed that there isn’t 0370 (Special Operations Officer) with A&S Phase 1/2 or ITC afterward. Figured I’d mention it for those interested, although very few will get through.
Very Respectfully,
Uhlenkott
Thanks for the note. This list is meant to capture MOSs available coming out of TBS. Good for people to know SOC is an option later in their career
If a Marine Officer’s MOS is deleted (e.g., 7587) what does their MOS default to??
In some cases Marines are automatically re-designated to a similar field. In other cases (e.g., Tanks are going away), Marines can move to a different occupation and get retrained.
Been looking for MOS for Social workers and HR Officer positions
Can you please tell me the maximum age to join the Marine corps as a social worker?
The maximum age to join as an HR Specialist?
Does this maximum age requirement apply to the Marine reserves as well?
There’s no such MOS. Every Marine officer must be able to handle social work type situations with their Marines
I’m interested in the reserve component and love the Security Forces MOS, is there a reserve Unit for that, additionally is there an officer position to oversee that assignment?
The closest MOS would probably be Military Police and you can seek to get orders overseas.
What would be the closest MOS for an officer that is related to foreign language interpretation? Similar to the enlisted cyptolingual.
You can become a Foreign Area Officer later in your career. You have to get selected to do this. You will get sent to get a Master’s degree at the Naval Postgraduate School and then spend a year becoming proficient in a language. You will probably end up working at an embassy in the region you are assigned.
